WORLD WHISKY DAY WITH GLENMORANGIE!!!

Last Friday we celebrated a world whiskey day by having a few friends over. Some were whiskey  connoisseurs, a few whiskeys friendly and a few whisky virgins (like me!!)

My entire house was transformed in a few hours by Nazneen Gamadia’s prettiest Florals. Flowers do add a beautiful magic to any place.

We choose Glenmorangie as it is one of Ashdin’s favorite single malts, a brand that is known around the world for its original taste.

To drink Glenmorangie is to experience a kaleidoscope of sensory adventures. Multiple layers of aroma, taste and textures unfold and entwine, dancing through your soul - revealing the beautiful and alluring complexity within. It is this complexity that makes Glenmorangie the most intriguing single malt whisky in the world.

Glenmorangie sent me the Cabinet of Curiosities where some of their Master Distiller, Dr Bill Lumsden’s most rare and unique experiments come to life.

The Cabinet of Curiosities had bottles, dozens of personalized glasses and even a golf ball and miniature giraffes. Why giraffes you would ask? An interesting fact I got to know on the occasion is that Glenmorangie produces model giraffes because the long necks of the copper stills in the distillery stand at 5.14m – the same height as a fully grown adult giraffe.

While everyone has their preferred style of sipping on malt, this World Whisky Day, we thought it would be nice for our friends to enjoy whiskey with a delectable twist.

We embraced our inner mixologist and tried three fun whisky cocktails by Glenmorangie.

We decided to serve the following very popular whiskey cocktails. The Very Old Fashion, Matheson Sour and the Highland Mint Julep.

I have attached the recipes for each so that you could try these for your next party and be sure to share the compliments.

1. The Original & Very Old Fashioned

50ml Glenmorangie Original

4 dashes Angostura Bitters

1 bar spoon white granulated sugar

Garnish: orange twist

Combine the ingredients in a glass. Mix and muddle to dissolve sugar. Add ice (block ice preferred) and stir to chill and slightly dilute.  Finish with an orange twist.

Glass: Old Fashioned

Description: Strong but sweetly balanced, it’s The Original’s take on the original cocktail. Glenmorangie Original and bitters, carefully muddled with white sugar and built over ice.

2. Matheson’s Sour

50ml Glenmorangie Original

25ml freshly squeezed lemon juice

10ml elder-flower cordial

10ml orgeat syrup

1 dash Angostura Bitters

Garnish: flamed orange zest

Shake all the ingredients with cubed ice in a cocktail shaker, double strain into a glass and finish with flamed orange zest.

Glass: Champagne Saucer

Description: Journey into the elegant spirit our founder William Matheson envisioned. Glenmorangie Original unwinds with fresh lemon juice, elder-flower cordial, the sweet nuttiness of orgeat syrup and bitters in this twist on a whiskey sour. Served straight up with Glenmorangie flair… and flamed orange zest.

3. Highland Mint Julep

50ml Glenmorangie Original

12 mint leaves

12.5ml sugar syrup

1 dash Angostura Bitters

Garnish: large mint sprig

Pour all the ingredients into a mixing glass, then gently press the mint to extract the essential oils.

Fill the mixing glass with cubed ice and stir to chill, dilute slightly and combine the ingredients.

Then fill a julep cup with crushed ice, and single strain the liquid from mixing glass into the cup. Stir slightly and top up with crushed ice. To finish, add a large sprig of fresh mint – and a straw cut short to ensure the mint scent is appreciated.

Glass: Julep

Description: For a spirited classic, try our take on the Mint Julep. Glenmorangie Original and sugar syrup mingle with fresh mint and a dash of bitters in this time-honored serve over crushed ice, finished with a flourish of aromatic mint leaves.

One of the favorites for all the men was the “Lasanta”,

Glenmorangie Lasanta is an elegant and full-bodied single malt whisky that has been extra matured in Spanish Oloroso Sherry casks after a minimum of 10 years in ex-bourbon casks.  Its luscious, soft mouth filling texture, and its deep, enticing, sweet aroma appeals to luxury spirit drinkers who like to experiment.

I enjoyed trying all the drinks. Though my favorite was The Very Old Fashion, without any sugar, as I don’t like my drinks sweet. It turned out to be a super fun night, with the right mix of friends and one outstanding single malt.

So glad that Glenmorangie introduced me to these single malt cocktails, one I would have otherwise probably never tried. Well there is a first time for everything!!
